IRS scam calls going around Union County, IL

UNION COUNTY, IL — An IRS scam is going around Union County, Illinois.

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds says a person claiming to work with the Internal Revenue Service has been calling Union County residents.

The caller says that money is owed to the IRS and if it is not paid, a warrant will be issued for their arrest.

This is a scam as the IRS will never:

  • Call to demand immediate payment
  • Require you to use a prepaid debit card
  • Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone
  • Threaten to bring in local police or other law enforcement groups to arrest you for not paying.

Edmonds says residents should also never provide personal information such as bank account numbers or social security numbers over the phone to unsolicited callers.
