Community remembers and honors fallen Hickman police officer
MAYFIELD, KY – A community remembered a fallen officer Tuesday. People lined the road after Hickman Officer Rodney Smith’s funeral at Mayfield’s First Assembly of God Church.
An autopsy found he drowned in floodwaters while on duty Friday night. Smith started working as an officer at the department only a couple of months ago, but community members say it’s almost as if he’d been there for years.
Sitting right across the street from the police department Tuesday were people who say officer Rodney Smith was just a funny guy.
Assistant librarian Kara Nall says Smith had plans to make their community better. They saw that with how he treated children.
“How do you explain that to them, when they become friends with this man, know they can trust this man with any problems they’re having? And it’s very heartbreaking,” Nall says.
Friends, family, members of the community, and a police detail from across the state lined the windy streets Tuesday, paying respects to an officer en route to his final call.
For someone who did so much for them, this was their turn to do something for him.
Smith’s family is asking, in lieu of flowers, that those wishing to honor him make a donation to the Easter Seals of West Kentucky.
