Canaan gives Morant advice on success
During Thursday nights 83-61 over Eastern Illinois, Murray State’s Ja Morant scored 27 points and racked up nine assists.
He did it in front of over 100 Racer fans in attendance and one very important Murray State alum.
Isaiah Canaan, who is considered one of the best to ever put on a Racer uniform, made the drive down from Chicago to catch an up close look at the latest phenom to wear the blue and gold uniform.
During his junior year at MSU, Canaan burst onto the scene on a national level, much like Morant has done this season. For his efforts, Canaan was named a 2nd team Associated Press All-American. And on his current track, Morant will join him.
Canaan eventually went on to be drafted in the second round of the 2013 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets. Morant is considered by many to be a top-3 pick in this years NBA Draft if he leaves early.
But with the new spotlight comes a lot more added pressure, and who better to give Morant advice than to someone who has been through the process already.
“I just told him to let everything else to just take care of itself,” Canaan said. “Go out there and continue to play hard, continue to control the things that you can control, which is going out here and leading this team. Night in and night out there is going to be a lot of attention, don’t get caught up in all of that. Just told him to continue to keep your head high, stay humble and continue to work.”
