Officers shot Cape Girardeau man who wouldn’t drop gun used to shoot woman, police say

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO — A man was standing over a woman he had shot outside her home, still holding the gun, when he was shot by officers in southeast Missouri, the police department says.

The Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Police Department says it received a call reporting a domestic violence incident involving a gun around 10:25 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Green Acres and Rand streets. In a public announcement about the incident, the department says officers arrived to find a man holding a handgun standing over a woman on the ground outside her home.

The police department says officers commanded the man — 56-year-old Hubert Ray of Cape Gireardeau — to drop the gun, but he didn’t. Instead, he turned to face officers. The department says officers again told him to put the gun down, but he didn’t. That’s when officers shot him, the announcement says.

Police say Ray shot the woman before officers arrived. After Ray was shot, he and the victim were taken to a local hospital.

On Wednesday, Ray was charged with first degree domestic assault, armed criminal action and first degree burglary. Bond was set at $1 million.
