Pinterest adds more ads, catalogs

If you’re a regular Pinterest user, you noticed it doesn’t look the same Monday as it looked on Sunday. Pinterest is adding more advertising and catalogs to the site and app.

Amid the pins and boards are advertisements. Not just ads, but full websites and catalogs of fashion designers and companies.

If you’re searching for women’s fashion, you’ll see the boards you follow, but they’re lost in all the ads. A simple search reveals catalog after catalog. Click on an item, and you go to that website where you can add it to a cart and checkout using a credit card or Paypal.

Announcing the change, Pinterest explained it this way: “People come to Pinterest in a shopping mindset open to discovering products, which creates a great connection between Pinners and businesses.” and “Keep an eye on more updates in the coming months.”

I’m not much of a Pinner, I do visit the site and I follow some boards and search for others. I found the new advertisements cluttered what Pinterest has always been: an idea and discovery search engine made up of some of the most creative people you’ll ever meet in person or online.

For Pinterest users, it may take some time to get used to the changes.
