UPDATE: Dispatchers say an intersection next to a church that was hit by a tornado Thursday morning will be closed overnight Thursday so crews can clear storm damage.

Blandville Road will be closed at Fisher Road overnight, according to McCracken County Emergency Dispatch.

That intersection is about 0.2 miles from the church.

The McCracken County Sheriff’s Department adds that detours will be available at Mayfield-Metropolis Road and McKendree Church Road.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Drivers entering the area will have to provide documentation that they live there. People who do not live in that area will not be allowed to drive through.

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY — Thursday’s severe weather tore through a church in western McCracken County.

Mt. Zion Baptist Church, which is on Blandville Road, has a daycare and preschool. The children sheltered in place in the innermost room during the storm — following the church’s storm plan. Mt. Zion preschool director Michelle Rushing told Local 6’s Shamarria Morrison they sang songs like “Jesus Loves Me” and “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” to keep the kids calm.

There were 40 children in the church when the tornado. Despite damage to the building, Shamarria reports that everyone who was in it is OK. She brought us more on this story on Local 6 at 5 and 6. You can watch both of those reports in the video above this story.
