McCracken County School Board votes to form superintendent search committee

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY – On Thursday, the McCracken County School Board met for the first time since naming Heath Cartwright as interim superintendent.

The Board hired the Kentucky School Board Association to help find candidates for the superintendent position. They also voted to put together a search committee. When Brian Harper was hired, he was not on the list of recommended candidates from the search committee. Board vice chairwoman Melanie Burkeen says she hopes things will be different this time when hiring a superintendent.

“I think that we are really focused on being transparent, doing what’s right and we will look at what they bring us and who all applies, and I personally am looking for an exceptional candidate,” says Burkeen.

Board Chair Steve Shelby left while we were talking to Burkeen, but he did answer some questions by phone. Shelby says it’s the boards right not to pick someone from the search committee’s list of recommendations.

“The search committee is a toll. It is the boards discretion to select,” says Shelby.

Shelby says he can’t guarantee that the board will pick a candidate from the search committees list. In Thursday’s meeting, Shelby appointed board member Kelly Walker to the search committee. Shelby says he picked Walker because of her 30 years of experience in education.
