Closure continues for U.S. 45 Ohio River bridge from Paducah to Brookport, IL

PADUCAH — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the U.S. 45 Ohio River bridge connecting Paducah and Metropolis, Illinois, will stay closed for at least a month.

On May 8, the cabinet announced the bridge would be closed because trucks have been ignoring the vehicle width restriction on the bridge, which could endanger the lives of workers performing maintenance and repairs on the bridge. In an update sent Wednesday, May 15, the cabinet said the closure will continue for at least another 30 days while contractor employees continue that construction project.

The cabinet says crews with contractor Judy C. Harp Company Inc. were making concrete pier cap and bearing pad repairs on the bridge when they consulted with a KYTC inspectors. The inspectors found that more work will have to be done on one of the bridge’s main span piers. The cabinet says crews will have to jack up one end of the main truss span of the bridge as part of that work, making it necessary to keep the bridge closed.
