I Am Local 6: For her birthday, Harper Bartholomew wants gifts for kids fighting cancer

MARTIN, TN — What did you want for your 10th birthday? A local girl decided she wants something different for her birthday this year — gifts for others.

Kevin Bartholomew’s daughter Harper is only 10, but her heart is already bigger than most. She still wants a birthday party and gifts — but this time, the presents will go to children battling cancer.

“She said ‘I don’t want the theme to be anything. I want to take my birthday. I want to have a party. I want people to bring presents, and the present that I get I want to take them to the Target House for St. Jude,'” Kevin said.

“I want to donate and give back,” Harper said. “It’s just hard to see kids that have cancer that might not make it. I just think that they should have fun when they’re going through all of this treatment. It will give them something to do instead of lay in bed all day and watch TV.”

She sees how the children suffer every day and feels like she has to help.

“The whole idea behind this is that she learns how good it feels to give. She has a very giving heart,” Kevin said.

Kevin is proud his daughter is reminding everyone to take a step back and think about what really matters.

“Children typically have more pure hearts,” Kevin said. “That’s what kids focus on, and she understands that this makes her feel good.”

People in the community are already donating presents to Harper’s cause. They filled up tha box with gifts to make children’s battle with cancer a little bit easier.

She said there’s no goal number for the gifts she wants to collect. “I don’t really have a number. Just a really big amount,” Harper said.

“No matter what, this was a success,” Kevin said. “If you set a goal and you don’t reach that goal, it’s a failure. And I don’t want her to feel like any part of this was not successful.”

Kevin hopes others see the example Harper is setting.

“It’s an overwhelming sense of pride,” Kevin said.

Harper’s birthday party is going on Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Jump for Joy in Martin, Tennessee.
