Woman injured on Murray State campus during Sunday storm dies

MURRAY, KY — A woman who was struck by lightning on the campus of Murray State University on Sunday has died, a university spokesman confirms.

In its storm report about Sunday’s weather event, the National Weather Service Paducah said the person was struck by lightning at 5:45 p.m. on Sunday. Calloway County Emergency Management Director Bill Call confirmed to Local 6 on Sunday that the person who was injured on campus was female. The woman was taken to Murray-Calloway County Hospital.

Tuesday evening, Murray State University Director of Communications Shawn Touney confirmed that the woman has died. He shared the following statement from the university:

“Monday evening, we were informed that a visitor to campus passed away as a result of a weather-related incident which occurred Sunday evening. The family was bringing their child to the university to participate in a summer program.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.”
