MARION, IL — A Marion junior high school student will preform at the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia, on August 4.

Michalee Smith- Clevenger, daughter of Jennifer and Ray Clevenger, was selected to preform with the High School Honor Choir. She just completed 8th grade at Marion Junior High and was nominated by her choir director, Elizabeth Byassee Shore.

Michalee has been selected for the ILMEA District 6 Jr Chorus for 3 years, which is something only a few students in Mrs. Shore’s career have accomplished, and she has received Outstanding Vocal Soloist at the Music in the Parks, Kentucky Kingdom.

After being nominated, Michalee submitted a recorded audition of an art song and required vocal selection prepared by her voice teacher, Heather Barnett of Shivelbine’s Music. Michalee received word of her selection in October and she is very thankful to her parents for affording her this opportunity.

While in Sydney, Michalee will tour Bondi Beach, Brice Mountain – including the steepest passenger railway, Echo Point and the 3 Sisters Rock formation- and the Rocks historic district. The concert is directed by Dr. Lynne Gackle of Baylor University. The finalists were chosen from 49 United States, Washington DC, 3 provinces of Canada, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Mexico, Poland, Qatar, South Korea, and Venezuela.

Anyone wishing to donate to Michalee’s expenses can send their donations to: Marion Jr High School Choir, 1609 W. Main St, Marion, IL 62959, Memorandum: Michalee. The trip is entirely self funded.
