MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY — A woman accused of embezzling thousands of dollars from a local elementary school parent teacher organization was arrested Thursday, the McCracken County Sheriff’s Department says.
Paducah Bank contacted Reidland Elementary School Wednesday about unusual activity noticed in the Reidland Elementary PTO Committee bank account. The sheriff’s department was contacted, and detectives say bank personnel told them about $38,000 had been taken from the account since August 2017 in cash withdrawals, Paypal transfers and online purchases.
Investigators say one person was mainly using the account — 37-year-old Rachel Morgan Hall, the committee president.
The sheriff’s department says Hall, in an interview with detectives Thursday, admitted taking money to pay bills and buy things for herself. According to the sheriff’s department, Hall “reported that at first it was only going to be a small amount — enough to make ends meet — but things spiraled out of control.”
As detectives continue to investigate, they’re parsing out which transactions in the account were for the PTO and which were not. The sheriff’s department says it expects the amount Hall will be charged with taking will decrease from the initial suspected amount of $38,000.
Morgan Hall was arrested on a charge of theft by failure to make required disposition of property — $10,000 or more.
