We are now just two weeks away from the 2019 NBA Draft, and all signs still point to Memphis using the #2 overall pick on Murray State’s Ja Morant. Murray State head coach Matt McMahon says he’s always been a fan of the NBA Draft. He said one of his favorite parts is the stories of the players, seeing where they’ve come from to get to the top of the basketball world. Morant’s story is a lot more personal for McMahon.

“To see it really unfold first-hand here with a front row seat the last three years, through the recruiting process and Ja’s two years here at Murray State, has really been special to witness,” McMahon said. “I hope he really enjoys every second of that night because it truly is an amazing story. The neat thing for Ja and his family is this is really just the beginning for them.”

McMahon also told us Thursday that senior Anthony Smith has been medically cleared to return to the Racers in 2019-20. McMahon said they have filed the proper paperwork to the NCAA to get Smith a fifth year of eligibility for a medical hardship. He believes they should get the official thumbs up from the NCAA any day now.
