McCracken County’s Jacob Ehling was brilliant on the mound, and Dylan Schneider came in to record the final out, as the Mustangs beat Rowan County 2-1 in the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Baseball State Tournament quarterfinals Thursday night in Lexington.
After allowing a single and a walk to the first two batters he faced, Ehling was masterful the rest of the way. The McCracken County senior scattered four hits in six and two-thirds innings, striking out six along the way. After Ehling gave up an RBI single in the seventh inning, Schneider came in and slammed the door on the Vikings and clinched the win.
The Mustangs were finally able to get Rowan County starter, and 2019’s Kentucky Mr. Baseball, AJ Hacker out of the game in the sixth inning. Seven different McCracken County players had hits on the day, including Logan Verble and Grant Godwin who both drove in runs for the Mustangs.
McCracken County will face the winner of Hazard and Louisville Trinity in the state semifinals Friday night. Rain postponed the Hazard/Trinity game on Thursday night. They’ll play at 10:00am central on Friday, and then the winner will play again Friday night. This is the fourth-straight year the Mustangs have earned a spot in the state semifinals, but they’ll be looking for their first-ever trip to the state championship game.
